Things to Do and See
|
Uig & Bernera on the Isle of Lewis, is one of thirteen areas that make up the Outer Hebrides. There really is something special about this part of the island, and it has so much to offer.
Beaches - Our beaches have the highest shell content in Scotland (arond 80-95%). On sunny days this means you could mistake the coastline for the Bahamas - the sea tekes on a tropical turquoise as the sand reflects the light of the sun through the sparklingly clean waters.
Local beaches include:
- Cliff Beach with white frilled rollers idaeal for surfing.
- Reef Beach with its long sweeping sands lined with rare machair.
- Uig Sands, a National Scenic Area with 2 miles of beautiful sands.
History - including the Norse Uig Chessmen, Bosta Iron Age house, and further afield the 3-4000 year old Callanish Stones and Blackhouse Village at Gearrannan.
Nature & Bird Watching - seals, otters, roe deer, highland cattle, golden eagles, the rare corncrake, herons, puffins, lapwings, sandpipers, oyster catchers, artic terns are all on our doorstep . . . and the amazing St. Kilda is a boat trip away from the local harbour.
Fishing - salmon, brown and sea trout in local lochs and rivers.
There are miles and miles of beautiful coastline and hills to walk and explore, and for the more adventurous, there's surfing, kayaking and kite surfing.
